When I read this I think of all the chains that bind us on a daily basis, even though we think we're free. Here's the image that comes to my mind: A man comes out of church smiling and happy. He goes out to eat, notices the cute waitress a bit too much, and *bam* a chain appears (Jacob Marley style). We follow him through the week and new chains appear each time he encounters a new sin/distraction. By the time Sunday rolls by, he can barely get off the couch, and tells the family he's sick and can't make it. As they leave, he leans back, turns on the tv, and thinks, "who needs church, anyway? I'm good."

Anonymous said...

You could also make an addendum to the above idea by showing the rest of the family going to church. There's everyone, sitting in the pews, chains all over them. Yet, as they turn their attention to Jesus and worship him, the chains fall off one by one. (This might also help with the eleven-minute stipulation.)

Anonymous said...

Or yet another way to deal with this might be to show a person who has just become a believer. New Guy/Girl is ecstatic, ready to follow Jesus in all circumstances, etc. Then come the stipulations: you have to do X a certain way, etc. etc. etc. Each new stipulation adds another link to the chain. It is only when NG realizes what's going on that he/she says no, that's not what this is about: it's about the love of the Savior, not who I am or what I'm doing. (It reminds me of people like "raised in the church" and counting on that to be sufficient.)

The song that comes to mind here is Casting Crowns' "What The World Needs" from "The Altar and the Door." Part of it says, "The world doesn't need my denomination, my Bible translation, etc. It just needs Jesus. ... We can't strap ourselves to the gospel, because we're slowing it down. Jesus is going to save the world, but maybe the best thing we can do is get out of the way."

That's a few ideas wrapped into one, but hey, we're brainstorming....

They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?"

Points to consider:
-The scripture reference is quoting the old testament prophet, Jesus is speaking to a Jew.
-The respondent reflects what that meant at that day and time and still speaks today. Being 'descendants of Abraham' has cultural and religious implications.
-Seeking to understanding the personal identity and the intensity that it affects their life is necessary to reaching anyone outside the faith of Messiah even today.

What is the message for today?
1) the Jews truly believed it then as most do today, that they have the promises given to Abraham. So how then can a man offer more than a promise made by G-d.
2) many did not then and do not today realize the bondage and the captivity they under without accepting Jesus is the Son of God the prophesied Messiah.
3a) if we want to take this route of understanding this through a Jewish perspective, we may want to look at Paul and contrast him with a modern day Jew.
3b) illustration of the Holy Spirit intervening on the path of a Jew in company with a Gentile going down the road discussing the matter
4) I can picture the image of activity in the foreground with a shadowing in the background of the Stephen/Shaul/Paul transitioning into Damascus Rd experience.
5a) how to illustrate the freedom (release from captivity) has me stumped
5b) scripture says for the Jew to come to faith it would "be as life from the dead." {Beth, is this an appropriate reference}

37"Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'
40"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'

Rabbi Marty thought you may be interested in giving some Jewish perspective to a film production that is being done at HOCC. I know Wednesday night activities at BHS may prevent you from attending a meeting tonight but I would very much appreciate your input. Would you give me feed back on the idea on the following notes and cast whatever changes or creative ideas you have into it. I will wait to publish till late this afternoon on the HOCC video ministry blogg and tonight it will be presented to the group.

The theme is Free the Captives. The verse is John 8:33 They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?"
I am still contemplating this verse because the Jews were slaves in Egypt for a little over 400 yrs. However, they were in G-d’s perfect will as this was foretold to Abraham regarding his descendants. History has taught us that G-d uses Israel as His servant. When he delivered His people, He wanted to reveal not only to them but to the Pharoah and the Egyptians that He was the only true G-D. The deliverance from Egypt was a prophetic illustration of the deliverance we experience from the slavery to sin through trusting in Yeshua. All the children of Israel passed through the Red Sea (immersion or baptism), all drank from the water from the rock (Yeshua), yet many died in the wilderness without ever entering the promised land. This happened because they did not continue trusting. They were cut off because of their unbelief.

Back in John 8:31, Yeshua said to the new Jewish believers, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth and the truth will make you free.” The truth is, it is only by trusting in Yeshua that we are saved, not by the works of righteousness. This truth liberates the slave of sin because all they have to do is trust in His righteousness and He sets them free.

I am still contemplating the 8:33 verse, but I hope this is hopeful!
Points to consider:
-The scripture reference is quoting the old testament prophet, Jesus is speaking to a Jew. He is speaking to a new Jewish Believer. They have to continue to believe. It is not enough just to be a descendant of Abraham.
-The respondent reflects what that meant at that day and time.

The Biblical understanding is that the call on Israel is irrevocable. Romans 9:4 “…who are Israelites, to whom belongs the adoption as sons, and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Law and the {temple} service and the promises…” Romans 11:29 “…for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.”
An important detail to note is that the scripture reveals that Yeshua spoke to Shaul in Hebrew. (Acts 26:14)
5a) how to illustrate the freedom (release from captivity) has me stumped
5b) scripture says for the Jew to come to faith it would "be as life from the dead." {Beth, is this an appropriate reference}Actually this scripture applies to more than just the Jews. This verse comes from the passage found in Romans 11:12 – 15

“Now if their transgression is riches for the world and their failure is riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their fulfillment be!
But I am speaking to you who are Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle of Gentiles, I magnify my ministry,
if somehow I might move to jealousy my fellow countrymen and save some of them.
For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will {their} acceptance be but life from the dead?”
This verse means that if the unbelief of the Jews has brought the riches of salvation to the nations who were without the promises of the covenant and far off, then how much more will the nations and the whole world be blessed when they are grafted back into their own olive tree. The result and blessing this brings to the world will be like resurrection life. If you read the entire 11th chapter of Romans, you will see the illustration of the cultivated olive tree.
Romans 11 goes to state that if the wild olive branches (gentiles) could be grafted into a cultivated olive tree, than how much more will the natural branches be able to be grafted in again. The natural branches were cut off because of unbelief and the wild branches can also be cut off because of unbelief.

Title: THE BIG LEAGUE?

EXT.FIELD DAY

Out over the horizon the sun is low as silhouettes of many
baseball players appear. They are dressed in matching
uniforms. Each carries a large bag. Some have a Fielding
glove and a ball, others wear batting gloves and carry a
bat. A fence leads into a beautiful ballpark.

Standing on the outside is a young man in a ball cap with
the letter M dressed in a ragged t-shirt and jeans with old
converse sneakers. Behind him are people of different ages
male and female also wearing Ball caps but with a B on them.

In bleachers are fans of the uniformed ball players. They
are wearing pinstripes. As they walk closer they call the
crowd to yell more. One slams his bat near the young man at
the gate. It is chained and locked.

PHILBERT
Hey, loser, get back.
We heard you've been talking.

YOUNG MAN
The Big League doesn't want
pretenders. It's for players with a
true love for the game.

PHILLIP
Love for the game? Did you hear
that guys, all we really needed all
along is a love for the game.

They all turn to each other laughing out loud. The crowd
laughs too. Philbert signals to Phelps with a finger snap
and Phelps brings his bag up to show the label. Everyone
quiets quickly as Philbert silences the crowd with the wave
of his other hand.

PHILBERT
You see this. This is the way to
the Big League buddy.

Philbert points at the label that reads, "Lu's Developmental
Baseball Camp." They walk closer to the gate.

PHELAN
This is what you have to have, have
to know, for the Big League.

Phelan points to his temple. He then kneels down and opens
the bag and pulls out a list. Philbert snatches it out of
Phelans hand and begins to read it.

PHILBERT
One, register for Lu's
Developmental Camp.

Phelan pulls out filled out registration.
Two, purchase the official Big
League uniform.

Philbert tips his hat. The Young Man looks up at his cap.
Three, purchase only equipment
sanctioned by Lu.

Phillup holds up his official LU ball. The Young Man looks
at his beat up old ball in his old mit.
Four, subscribe to Coach Devine's
Insider by Lu Publications.

Phelan pulls a magazine out of the bag.
Five, eat only Lu nutritional
supplements...

Phelan brings out a bottle of vitamins and holds them next
to his face grinning then winks. The Young Man just nods his
head.
and Six, the most important,

Phelan tosses Philbert a book from out of the bag.
the official Big League rule book.

Philbert holds it up as the crowd yells and the Young Man
sighs.

YOUNG MAN
You guys are way off track. My Dad
runs the Big League and

PHILBERT
You're Dad? You trying to tell us
that the great Coach Devine is your
Dad.

YOUNG MAN
and he wants real players.

PHILLIP
Like those misfits you got back
there?

Phin steps up from behind. He is the smallest of the group.

PHIN
Yea, misfits.

He points at the players behind the Young Man.
He's even got girls.

They laugh again.

YOUNG MAN
You can join us as well. You just
have to follow me to my fathers.

PHELAN
Your father(sarcastically) Coach
Devine. More like follow you to
loosersville.

YOUNG MAN
You guys are going to be the
losers. That list is just holding
you back. Your never going to enjoy
the true spirit of the game with
all those rules. Getting to the Big
League is simple.

PHILBERT
Simple ain't got nothin' to do with
it. You got a process that cannot
be skipped or overlooked.
It has to be followed strictly. But
then what do you know you're on the
outside looking in at us.

The Young Man looks down at the locked gate and everyone on
the other side.

YOUNG MAN
This field is all your ever going
to know. This is the end for you
but not for my so called misfits.

The Young Man turns and walks away. As he passes his
teammates get up and follow him on either side. A wider shot
reveals them walking toward a huge stadium. In a flash of
light they are transformed into bright beautiful uniforms.
180 degrees and the field darkens and everyone goes to the
fence and their faces slowly turn skeletal. A wind blows in
a dust storm and as it passes all that is left are the bags
and uniforms and the rulebook and finally the list.

We do have a Baseball team at the Church that would be an easy location to get too.
I can use the field at DC Schools.
We can tie in another story with Matt. 22-14.
A man invited people to a wedding fest, but no one came. Then He invited outfits and misfits.

Read this story on the Last Supper.
copy and paste this link:

http://www.snopes.com/glurge/lastsupper.asp

According to this article this story may or may not be true but the message that it illustrates is true.

The parallels are these. (My Version)
1. The pharisees start out good but over time become prideful, arrogant, liars and even murders
The Jesus model starts out good but over time becomes prideful, arrogant, a liar and eventually murders someone.
2. Jesus tries to correct the Pharisees but they refused to listen and persisted in their pride.
The model is encouraged by several people in his life to turn back but he gets worse and worse.
3. Both the pharisees become sons of Satan and do not change.
The model was once Jesus and eventually becomes Judas.

John 8:33, here is my idea[though it may not be good enough]. You can show a person going to church and acting like a christian on Sunday but then that person goes off and starts living like the rest of the world during the week. Then when a pastor confronts that person telling him[or her] that they need to get a personal relationship with Christ. But that person then says something along the line like, ''But I go to church and have done all the religious things so I am already saved. I am not a slave to anything. Why do you say I need to get saved? I am already going to church.'' I believe the jews that said this verse in the Bible were into their self righteousness and believed that just because they were descendants of Abraham they would inherit eternal life. And yet I have seen people at churches that say if they had lived in the time of Christ, they would not have rejected Him. Yet I then hear of them getting drunk the following week and they actually think that since they go to church they don't need to be set free of anything. I don't know if this is a good idea or not, I just thought I could share a possible idea with you. Thanks,
God Bless

Quote:

"Obstacles cannot crush me. Every obstacle yields to stern resolve. He who is fixed to a star does not change his mind."

the story in which Leonardo first paints Jesus Christ, after searching many months for the perfect model? And then, years and years later, after painting all eleven other disciples, has an even more grueling search for the perfect model for Judas? And - amazingly - the same person ends up being the model for both? That story?

HEY THERE!!! :)
Sorry i've been slammed for the most part of today. changing business travel and what not- other timely significant job tasks. BUT i was going to send you what i wrote last night, then i came on here and read your last email here- that notes on the article about the Da Vinci story... so i went back to my writing and changed a couple of things. here is what i now have:
(it's a brief "treatment" but it doesn't go into very much detail of the character's background story-since well we already know what we want them to be like-
and FOR TIME's sake, I feel this brief --at least-- tells you what's happening in the story).
check it out, let me know what you think!
AND*one more note, I named him "X" for now, just to get on with writing, i'd like to chose a more meaningful name, when we know if we want to go with it!

Da Vinci & X met one day at church. After a brief conversation X agreed to model Jesus in Da vinci’s Last Supper painting. Da vinci chose Xavier because he saw an aura that fit Jesus’ life. What better man to model Jesus than one that has the tenderness in his eyes and the same warmth in his posture. X was in deed a good man, of moral, of care. The painting master piece was completed, and Da vinci earned yet another success. He thanked X for his time into this project. They part and both go on their separate ways. Da Vinci never saw him again at church. Later we learn that X’s life has turned into sin, one act after another, all contributing to greater burden. Although he is oblivious to the burden, it is hurting his life, leaving damages in his surroundings like his relationships, and finance. Everyone around him sees it and (weakly) attempt to bring it to his attention. He ignores it because he is already way too involved in sin-that he cannot see past sins. His lies pile onto another, and lead into an even greater sinful act: Murder. A murder crime; only to cover up for other lies. The crime’s brutality appears to have no effect on him, his heart is cold, and now numb. He cannot feel anything. He feels the crime is not that great of the deal. After committing the crime (to establish that he’s immune to this evil) he carries on with his life, next day, same daily “rituals,” getting ready, doing the morning chores, walking by the market etc. As he walks down a crowded aisle in the trade market, he runs into Da Vinci. Da vinci is in a hurry. By this time Da Vinci is well respected by his works, and few, the educated can recognize him on the street. X recognizes Da Vinci. Da Vinci has particular mannerisms that stand out from the crowd. X calls on Da Vinci, they greet Da Vinci, not recognizing this man, but in a courteous manner greets him back. Da Vinci continues on, but X insists and wants to bring it to Da Vinci’s attention how they once met, and how years ago, X himself portrayed Jesus for him. Right before X can begin to tell him, Da Vinci scans him one more time and exclaims, “ahhh… Fortunato (a friend that is with him this whole time) I think I found the model I’ve been needing for Judas!!! (which we will establish, is another painting and not the last supper)”
Fin.

feedback, feedback!

The Sin-ravaged Life

When Leonardo da Vinci was painting his masterpiece, The Last Supper, he selected as the person to sit for the character of the Christ a young man, Pietri Bandinelli by name, connected with the Milan Cathedral as chorister.

Years passed before the great picture was completed and when one character only -- that of Judus Iscariot -- was wanting, the great painter noticed a man in the streets of Rome whom he selected as his model. With shoulders far bent towards the ground, having an expression of cold, hardened, evil, saturnine, the man seemed to afford the opportunities of a model terribly true to the artist's conception of Judas.

When in the studio, the profligate began to look around, as if recalling incidents of years gone by. Finally, he turned and with a look half-sad, yet one which told how hard it was to realize the change which had taken place, he said, "Maestro, I was in this studio twenty-five years ago. I, then, sat for Christ."

INT. NIGHT MILLER’S HOME

Mrs. Miller is washing dishes. She is (describe her persona). She prepares dinner, washing, chopping vegetables.
Mr. Miller walks into the door.
“Sweetie, I’m home!”
Mr. Miller is a man of about 30 something, dressed in middle class American working attire, thin tie, dark framed glasses, brief case etc/
A very well groomed man, good posture, dressed in a collard shirt and business slacks. Makes his way to the kitchen to greet his wife. He Caresses his wife’s cheek-bone and they exchange a loving glance.
He breaks the moment and says,
DAD
So how long before dinner? I could eat a whole cow!
MOM
Oh a few more minutes, really. I’m barely going to-
MATHEW
Dad!
MATHEW is the middle and only son of the Miller’s. He’s about 10 years old and loves comic books & cartoons in the morning.
DAD
Hey son!
Hug, picks him up etc.
Ok sweetie sounds just swell I think I’ll get enough time to get back to reading my paper… And you sir, to finish your homework…
MATHEW
I know, I know
Makes his way back to kitchen table to his homework.
MOM
Alright darling, I’ll let you know.

CUT TO
Little Sandy, youngest daughter, playing with doll, and has coloring books all around her. We see MATHEW secretly reading a cartoon comic book behind his school books.

MOM
Sandy how is the coloring coming along?

SANDY
UHU

MOM
Mathew, are you almost done with that arithmetic?
MATHEW scrambles to hide comic.
(TO SANDY) Will you do me a favor hun, turn up the radio just a tad bit…
MATHEW wants to race SANDY to the radio knob
SANDY
I got it, I got it! She told ME!
MOM
Not you Mathew, you get back to your homework.
RADIO VO
Attention: there have been reports of an unidentified flying object in the area. If you have any information, please contact your local authorities, immediately.

MARCY on her way out the door

MARCY
Alright, Mother I’m off to meet Patrick and we’ll be back shortly for dinner.
MOM
Ok, dinner is in 30 minutes, so don’t be late.
MARCY
Yes mother, I promise.
MARCY leaves.

MOM continues to prepare dinner, now grating cheese.

MATHEW
How do you spell “Baseball?”
SANDY
“B-as-bal”
MOM
Hmm.. Baseball, B-A-S-
Doorbell rings
MOM
Sweetie, can you get that? My hands are full!
Her hands are full of graded cheese and way too preoccupied.

SANDY
I got it!
(To sibling)

SANDY makes her way to the door to find Two astronauts. They are wearing futuristic astronaut suits. They appear to be taller than the average human, and looks almost hero like-in a scary way-from SANDY’s perspective. One is wearing thick and opaque sunglasses and visually scans & examines the entrance of the house. SANDY in shock and frozen still, not taking her eyes away from the two men
SANDY
Mom, There are two (PAUSE) two men-people at the door

SANDY tries to begin and shut the door, since she doesn’t hear her mom’s reaction.
CUT TO

MOM
MOM has a bothered smirk on her face, wipes hands off with apron as she quickly heads to the door. Her heals tapper-tapper in a hurry but with short steps.
As she approaches the door she reopens the door and says,

MOM
Sorry….oh! Can I help you?

Astronaut 1
Pardon the intrusion; we have something very important that we need to discuss with you.

MOM without taking a blink away from the two men,
MOM
“Honey, can you come here for a minute?”
MATHEW hides his comic book beneath all books, or under his shirt. And heads to the door, thinking mother called him, but she really meant DAD.

ASTRONAUT 2 (wearing sunglasses) scans MOM and with a smooth pivot makes his way to the front of the porch almost like guarding the entrance. He glances into the distance, still in sunglasses.

DAD arrives to the door from the study, holding newspaper to show wife a picture of who he found,
DAD
Hunny you’ll never believe who was in the paper today!-
He stops his sentence abruptly in reaction to the strange site of two men standing in these funny shiny suits.
DAD
Fella’s what can I do for ya?
He notices the other astronaut at the porch’s entrance.

ASTRONAUT steps & leans in closer to the family almost intruding into their home.
MOM Still with a confused look on her face, bearly blinking. By this time the entire Miller Family that is home is at the entrance.

Astronaut 1 begins to explain
Hello Ma’m, sir. Listen, this might be difficult for you both to understand, but we are here to bring you back to earth.

MOM
What?
DAD
We ARE on earth! We have lived here all our lives!
MOM
Are you crazy?! Phillip!!
Looking at her husband for help in understanding the situation.

Astro 1
No you don’t understand, you and your husband, and a few other’s were abducted as infants, and taken away from the real earth. Once upon a time, these aliens were abducting people from our planet, and bringing them here as captives.
Beat
Silence.

DAD
That is absurd! I have been- WE have been living her our entire lives!
And I’m not a captive of anyone or to anyone!!
MOM
Besides, this is America, the land of the free! No one here is a slave.
DAD
That’s right…apple pie and baseball!
ASTRONAUT 1
Obviously, your memories have been enhanced, and very much affected by your time here.
CUT TO
SANDY is standing with her hands behind her back, with a very intrigued look, watching ever move of the Astronaut with shades. She looks away into the distance where he is looking. She tip-toes to reach the same view. She looks at him, and repeats this to try and mock him, to see what he is seeing. She finally asks,
SANDY
Can I try?
ASTRO 2 grins and hands her a pair of glasses from his suit pocket/bag etc.
SANDY wears the over-sized glasses and begins to observe.
CUT TO

Astro 1
Listen, there isn’t much time. There is an asteroid heading right towards this planet and we have estimated its’ impact in T minus 70.

SANDY
Hey Mom…Look at my glasses!

DAD steps onto the porch, folds arms in front of chest.
MOM steps closer to DAD puts her arm on his shoulder from behind.

RADIO VO in the background
..as well as reports of flashing lights in the sky..

MOM
Now, are you telling us that everyone has been brought here from earth?

Astro 1
Yes, you are only hostages here. Everyone on this planet is an alien.
MATHEW
Woaw! I knew it! I knew my friend Joey was an alien!
MOM
Oh honey, don’t be silly Joey is not an alien.
Astro 1
Look, you need to decide right now. You must choose to come with us now and live, or you can stay here and die.
MATTHEW
Daddy, I don’t wanna die!
DAD
Ok, that will be just about enough of that! You guys need to get out of our home now. And take your preposterous stories with you!
DAD begins to push them out of the porch MOM gets SANDY and brings her away from the astronaut.
ASTRONAUT 1 glazes into DAD’s eyes with disappointment. DAD ignores the look and continues to push them out of their home.

MOM returning to the kitchen
Sandy go gather your coloring books & crayons I need you to come to the kitchen, stay here with me.
SANDY begins to gather all her belongings using the shades.
DAD locks door and heads to the kitchen.
Mathew are you almost done son?
MOM to dad
What was that?
DAD nods his head expressing to ignore it.
MARCY and her boyfriend PATRICK are now at the door, her hair looks different, and tucks in her shirt right before opening the door. Door is locked so she begins to knock, and ring doorbell and peek through the window.
MOM
Snaps out of the “gazed & confused expression” and goes to the door.
SANDY & DAD follows
MARCY
Hi MOM! Dinner smells great and we’re starved! Hey, we heard the strangest story on the radio on the way over here…

PATRICK
Good evening Mr & Mrs Miller. Hi there Sandy, cool glasses.
SANDY
Gasps.
CUT TO

ASTRONAUT
I repeat sir, not one captive.
Not one.

INT. Headquarters
Chief Command over sees the operation command room. He can hear the report over the speaker, but doesn’t say a word. Instead, he glances at several photographs placed near by his command button. The photographs are of infants & newborns, all different children. Chief takes a good look of the photos, and with the same finger holding the photo he brushes the surface of the image. We see one tear slowly taking its path from his eye to his cheek to his chin. He lowers the crown of his head in disappointment. Closes his eyes.
We see an asteroid flash through the screen.
Fin.
FADE OUT.
